Check out the excellent new report from Not Our Farm and FairShare CSA Coalition, Farming into the Future by Centering Farmworkers: A Deep Dive into What Diversified Vegetable Farm Employees Value in a Workplace! In the authors’ words:
This is a resource informed by farmworkers’ voices and aimed at supporting positive, long-term employment opportunities for workers on diversified vegetable farms.
This toolkit focuses on four key areas farmworkers have said they deeply value in a workplace: COMMUNICATION, WORK ENVIRONMENT, OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROWTH, and LIVABLE WAGES. While this resource speaks directly to farm owners, it also strives to paint a picture of what’s possible for those workers who seek to build a career in farmworking. As workers, it can also be helpful in thinking about how to have challenging conversations around these topic areas.
Readers will find many common themes between Farming into the Future and the AJP’s Food Justice Certification standards.
The report was co-authored by Sarah Janes Ugoretz (FairShare CSA Coalition), Rue Policastro (Owl’s Nest Farm), and Anita Adalja (Not Our Farm, and also a member of AJP’s Advisory Council), with input from many more farmers. Read the report here.
